What is prickly pear? And where does the fruit grow?
Prickly pear is also known as cactus fig or barbary fig. In Latin it is called Opuntia Ficus-Indica and originates from Mexico. The plant has spread all over the world and you will often find it in semi-arid/arid desert areas like Mexico, Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco etc.
Can you eat a cactus fruit?
YES!, in Morocco, for centuries the Berber women have been picking the cactus fruits and eating them or extracting the precious cactus seed oil to use the oil in their beauty rituals. Locally, the fruit is eaten because of its healthy properties for e.g. digestion, treatment of diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity and hangovers, etc.
How is prickly pear oil made? And why is it so expensive?
It is an extensive, hard and time-consuming process to harvest the prickly fruits for the Moroccan women. Everything is done by hand. The cactus plant is full of prickly spines and so is the fruit. The spikes must be removed manually, and the seeds and pulp must be separated from each other.
The seeds are dried and cold-pressed to preserve all the good properties, vitamins and antioxidants. A cactus fruit contains approximately 150-300 seeds and each seed contains only 5% oil. It takes over 1 million seeds and over 36 hours of manual labor to produce a single liter of oil. Therefore, the oil is one of the most expensive on the market due to the time-consuming processing.
